Professional OrganizationsWe encourage practitioners to join professional organizations which support their profession and industry. Explore the purpose and offerings of the various professional organizations (of which only a handful are listed below). Most have no residency requirements for membership. There are opportunities to network and/or collaborate with peers through local chapters, committees, and conferences. In addition to publications (such as newsletters, magazines, and journals), some also provide searchable digital libraries, online courseware, and certifications. CanadaCIPS. Founded in 1958 (as the Computing and Data Processing Society), the Canadian Information Processing Society has over 8,000 members. Membership is open to those actively engaged in, or interested in, the practice, administration, teaching or study of information processing. U.S.A.ACM. The Association of Computing Machinery claims to be the "world's largest and oldest international educational and scientific computing society" with over 80,000 members. Membership requires a Bachelor's Degree (in any subject area); or equivalent level of education; or 2 years of full-time employment in the IT field. AITP. Its roots in the 1950's, membership in the Association of Information Technology Professionals is open to students, educators, and individuals employed in the management of information resources. ASQ. With its origins in the American Society for Quality Control (1946), the American Society for Quality is "the leading quality improvement organization in the United States", with over 100,000 members worldwide. IEEE-CS. Claiming to be "the world's oldest and largest professional association of people in computing" the Computer Society has over 100,000 members. Required qualifications: electrical engineer or computer scientist graduated from a recognized educational degree program; or a related degree plus three years applicable professional experience; or six years applicable professional experience. PMI. Founded in 1969, the Project Management Institute is the leading nonprofit professional association in the area of Project Management, with over 95,000 members worldwide. SEI. The Software Engineering Institute is a federally funded research and development center, founded in 1984 and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) with the core purpose of helping others make measured improvements in their software engineering capabilities. USENIX. With over 7,000 members, the Advanced Computing Systems Association continues to bring together engineers, system administrators, scientists, and technicians working in the computing field. United KingdomBCS. With over 38,000 members, the British Computer Society is the only Chartered Engineering Institution for Information Systems Engineering. AustraliaACS. With over 16,000 members, the Australian Computer Society is on a per-capita basis one of the world's largest computer societies. |
